The Blue Jays sured up the future today with a couple of long-term extensions for Alex Rios and Aaron Hill. The deal combined is reportedly worth $115.5 million and will keep the guys around for a little while, potentially until 2014.
Alex Rios, who hit .294 with 24 homers and 85 RBI last season, will receive a 6 year $64 million deal which includes a team option for 2015 thats worth $13.5 million extra. Potentially the deal could be worth nearly $77.5 million or an average of $11 million a season.
Aaron Hill, who hit at a .291 clip with 17 homers and 78 RBI, was signed to a 4 year extension worth about $12 million with club options for 2012, ‘13, and ‘14. Hills deal is a little bit more complicated then Rios’ being that there are many different ways Toronto can either re-sign him before the 2011 season which will cost the Jays $26 million, or if they decided to go another way and allow him to become a free agent.
I like the deals because they sure up the 2nd base and right-field positions for the long-term. Both guys deserve the deals they were given especially Rios who has continued to improve since his MLB debut in 2004.
