Toronto Drops Close One, 3-2

by @ 6:27 pm. Filed under 2008 Blue Jays

The Blue Jays dropped the 3rd game of the series against the New York Yankees on Thursday in a close one, 3-2. The loss gives the Yankees the series and brings Toronto’s overall record to 1-2 so far this year.

It took both teams an extended period of time before getting any runs on the scoreboard. Finally in the 4th Toronto put a run together and added another in the 5th.  It took the Yankees high powered offense nearly 6 innings before recording a single run, but in the bottom of the 6th they got 2. The game was tied at 2 all the way into the bottom of the 8th when the Yanks got the final run of the game, and the win. The most impressive games for Toronto came from lead-off man and shortstop David Eckstein who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. The only other solid game came from RF Alex Rios who went 1-for-4 for the day with a RBI and a stolen base off Hughes. Rios RBI gives him 3 for the season and the stolen base was his 2nd so far this year.

Blue Jay starter Dustin McGowan had himself a solid game working 6 innings allowing 4 hits, 2 runs, and he K’d 4. Brian Wolfe came in to do some relief work in the 7th and gave up the game with the 1 run he allowed. Wolfe was given the loss in this one bringing his season record to 0-1 so far.

These are exactly the type of games Toronto wants to be apart of, slow paced with strong pitching. The problem with this game is that they just couldn’t get a couple more runs to seal the win and the series. 5 different players didn’t get a hit for the Jays and it is going to be very difficult to win with so many guys putting up goose eggs in the hits column.

Next Up: Toronto will begin a series with the other AL East powerhouse and defending World Series champ Boston Red Sox at 7:15.  The home opener will showcase starters Shaun Marcum and Boston’s knuckle baller Tim Wakefield.
